Need a Nap at Humber?

Have you ever been so tired of school assignments and difficult group members that you feel like you need a nap? Well I know I have those moments at Humber, where all I want to do is close my eyes and fall asleep for a while and wake up fresh for the busy day ahead.

I’ll let you know of some great napping spots that I have found over my 2 years at Humber. The most commonly thought about spots to nap are usually the library and of course in the back of classroom when your professor is speaking. But those places won’t work simply because Humber classrooms aren’t large enough for you to do that - your professor will easily see you - and the library is much more difficult as there are too many students making noise for you to sleep.

So you’re probably wondering where are the best places to sleep? Well it all depends on the time of day and how far you are willing to walk to get a quick nap. If you’re at school in the morning between 8-10 a.m., it is a bit difficult to pinpoint the best place. Right above the cafeteria is usually used for group projects but it is a perfect place to take a quick nap. There are also empty classrooms all around Humber at different times of the day but usually the D, E and H areas have plenty of empty classrooms.

I am not advising anyone to go to school to nap but if you’re tired at any point and need a quick nap to re-energize your mind and body so you can be a better student, then by all means, take a nap!

Hopefully these tips and locations, will help you!

What is OCMC

In business, like in every other aspect of life there are so my acronyms that it begins to get hard to keep track of what each acronym stands for.  Acronyms can come from anywhere; you use them all the time in conversations with friends TTYL, LOL, and LMAO. In business there are many different acronyms as well such as; GDP, PPP, GNI, and the list can go on! But the one I will be focusing on is one that it is important to Humber and marketing students in Ontario.

OCMC which stands for Ontario College’s Marketing Competition, OCMC consist of various competition formats such as quiz bowl where competitors are asked various marketing definitions. As well as a case analysis exists where each competitor looks at a case and tries to define the problem and come up with various solutions to that problem. It seems to me that not too many people outside of the marketing world, are aware of how much of a big deal it is to be apart of or compete in OCMC. Just picture all the best marketing students in Ontario competing with each other.

For business it’s a perfect opportunity to pick out the next Steve Jobs or the next person to have that million-dollar idea. It is important for OCMC to continue and to get the message across of how important it is for students to try out and participate in OCMC.

It is also an enjoyable experience to compete with other great marketing students! It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to both the team as well as to yourself, to put in the effort and long hours of reading, preparing as well as practising to become a great OCMC competitior.

I am looking forward to the OCMC, I will be competing in the case study analysis for retail I hope everyone will wish me luck as I prepare for the challenges a head!

What Can Happen in a Humber Minute?

Tuesday they are giving away popcorn and on Thursday you can play PS3 in the concourse. That’s crazy right? Well that’s Humber for you, always having something new and fun planned for students as they go through their day. You just never know what you’re going to see next when you walk by HSF (Humber Student Federation) stand right in front of the bookstore one day you can see fake beer pong and then another day they’re giving away free popcorn.

There is never a dull moment at Humber. As soon as you think, “finally we have a break from HSF” BAM, in your face is a new activity coming up or something that you might be interested in doing. Right away you can get flyers that will inform you of any pub nights and as well as when they are giving away free breakfast to students.

HSF will also let you know of the great places to hang out when you want to just relax with friends. They will point you to the direction of the Linx pub and of course the Games Room. I can not begin to tell you how many times I had to run through the halls of Humber, which can be extremely difficult during peak times, to make sure I wasn’t late for class. You can get a little carried away. It’s a great atmosphere to hang out with friends and meet new ones as well.

Humber is an exciting and diverse college there is always something happening as well as something for everyone to do.

You never know what will happen next!!

Why Humber College is #1 for me

When applying to a post secondary institution, what are some of the first things you do? Do you look at the program outline, the faculty, and actual location of the school? And don’t lie to yourself as you’re reading this, because I know you don’t do any of these things - I didn’t!

As a 20 year old, and with 1 year of University under my belt, I wanted to make a choice that I was actually going to be happy with. So I did the most logical thing and that was to ask friends who were currently at potential schools as well as people who graduated from that school, how difficult it was for them to get a job once they had finished their studies? This was the key for me.

I knew that I wanted a school that would give me hands-on experience as well as a solid foundation in the fundamentals - so I could get that job. My first choice was Humber College, followed by George Brown and Seneca. I weighed my options and after discussing it with alumni, I knew Humber was the right choice for me! Humber could give me the blend I was looking for.

Humber understands that each student has a different needs and varied reasons for coming to Humber. Some come to Humber on their path to University, others come to get the skills and knowledge needed to get a job! This flexible approach also appealed to me.

So here I am - on my way to graduating - and loving it!

Almost A Year Later ...

Its 3 o’clock in the morning, the bar is shutting down, and the servers are kicking you and your friends out. You then stumble down the street to Mickey D’s and wolf down a handful of cheeseburgers before you go home to pass out... Sound familiar? We’ve all been there before, and someday we’ll all be there again - just not quite as often as we once were.

Just over a year ago, like many of you, I had no clue where or what I would be doing in 2012. I didn’t know if I was going to be a business owner, a university student, a Humber student, or a “nobody” working for a “somebody”.

Now, thanks to the hard work and dedication of many, I can say that I know who I am, what skills I hone, and I have a clear picture of where I want to be in 5 years. As someone with a passion for marketing and communications, finding the right mentorship to guide those skills towards success is what I truly lacked. Humber proved to be a valuable resource for me. I was able to create strong relationships with many industry professionals, and I was able to get the support and mentorship of a few professors that would be instrumental in finding me opportunities when I graduated.

There was one course in particular that helped me to raise the bar more than ever, and that was the Internet Marketing course that so many students are excited to take. Whether it was providing special pricing at major marketing events or engaging in real life projects that build valuable experience, the Internet Marketing course pushes even the least motivated students to get their hands dirty. I know I wouldn’t be where I am today without it!

Working with many of Canada’s largest corporate institutions has proven to me that the skills that I picked up in this course are incredibly valuable – skills that are really a “need-to-have,” not a “nice-to-have.” Skills that I am using everyday to stay current and to develop in my career in digital marketing.

In today’s rapidly changing environment, those plagued by FUD (fear, uncertainty, and denial) do not succeed. In the digital world, we are preparing to enter a dynamic period in time where hardcore developers are going to get an opportunity to showcase their talents like never before and as marketers we need to stay on top of these trends and opportunities.  As creative marketers, it takes a strong knowledge of new technology, communication channels and of course people to be successful.

With this being said, I hope many of you decide to make the right choices, and respect the right people. Because, you will find that as you get older, your life can change pretty quickly after a year goes by. I wish you all the best of luck in your ventures – and look forward to seeing you at future Humber marketing events. Cheers!

My final thoughts

Two years ago I enrolled into the Marketing Diploma program at Humber College. At the start of the program I was completely undecided upon what I wanted my future career path to be. Now, nearly two years later and it’s hard to comprehend that my time at Humber is coming to an end. Within this blog I am going to share some of my final thoughts and experiences that I believe could be beneficial to future Humber students.

The transition from growing up in a small town in Northern Ontario to living and attending College in Toronto was one of the most difficult aspects to deal with. I never thought that I would face culture shock only three hours away from home. The entire experience has been extremely valuable. Not only have I developed a sound set of business and marketing skills, but I have networked and created an array of opportunities and strong contacts throughout various industries.

So what now?

Two years ago if you asked me what I wanted to do after college, I simply wouldn’t have been able to give you an answer. Now, I can tell you with ease that I want to work within Digital Marketing. However, I don’t want to start working just yet. A few months ago I began exploring my options for after I graduate. I thought about working, volunteering, and travelling and then I came across Humber’s transfer options that they hold with various Universities. As soon as I saw it, I knew that it was for me- Griffith University in Gold Coast, Australia. I immediately contacted KOM Consultants and sent in my application. In January of 2013, I will be living and going to school in Australia, working towards my Bachelor’s Degree.

Whats next?

As you can imagine, the cost of continuing my studies overseas in Australia is fairly expensive. I spoke with a few of my teachers and reached out to some of the contacts that I met while at Humber. As of now, I have secured an internship and I have valuable leads for two possible jobs, all without ever looking at a job search website.

My advice

If I could offer one piece of advice for current or future Humber students it would be to GET INVOLVED AND NETWORK! Two years may seem like a long time but before you know it- it will be over. The professors at Humber have an immense amount of knowledge and contacts, the one thing that I learnt is that it never hurts to ask for help and advice! The key is to get involved; here are a few examples of how to make the most out of your Humber experience:

  •  Attend the events that the business school hosts and makes available to students such as: Grads Give Back, IAB Conferences, and Marketing Now
  • Join groups and teams such as: OCMC and Toastmasters.
  • Attend job fairs and information sessions
  • Pay attention to the Humber Student Federation- They host some amazing events.

Writing blogs and managing the social media for Marketing Humber has been a valuable learning experience. I would like to extend a very special thank you to Christina Clements and everyone else at the Humber College Business School for making this opportunity possible.

Before I sign off I would like to leave you with some proof that networking at Humber actually works. A few weeks ago Humber hosted the annual Grads Give Back event, the final speaker Steve Lorini offered students to apply for an internship with the radio station Z103.5 in Toronto. I spoke with Steve after the event and he shared some insight into the position and helped me set up an interview. Earlier this week I found out that I will be working on the Z103.5 Summer promotions street team!

So remember to get involved and network, but most importantly don’t be hesitant to ask for help!

Humber Students attend the IAB Mixx Conference

Last week students from the Humber College Internet Marketing class were invited to attend the IAB Mixx Conference downtown Toronto. The annual conference welcomed the students to learn about the trends within Digital Marketing from respected industry professionals. The full-day conference focused on the areas of: innovations in efficiencies, creative ideas and consumer experiences within Digital marketing.

The event featured innovative and insightful information from six industry professionals covering all areas of digital marketing. The presenters included:

·         Jeff Rosenblum, Documentary Filmmaker "The Naked Brand", Co-President and co-founder, Questus
·         Geoff Ramsey, CEO and co-founder, eMarketer
·         Randy Weyersberg, Vice President Marketing, Canadian Tire
·         Steve Mykolyn, Chief Creative Officer, Taxi
·         Sheldon Owen, CEO, Unified,
·         Wendy Robertson, CEO and Co-founder, Kneebon

Throughout the day, all of the presenters touched upon key areas within the world of Digital Marketing. The importance of transparency, social responsibility, trust and creativity were highly stressed by each presenter. In order to touch upon all of these areas I would like to refer to the presentation from Randy Weyersberg on the Canadian Tire House of Innovation.

The House of Innovation

Last year Canadian Tire purchased a four-bedroom, two-bathroom fixer-upper home in Toronto. The purchase made Canadian Tire the first major brand to ever own a home in Canada. Upon purchasing the home, Canadian Tire launched their ‘Bring it on’ campaign, which focused on trying to better understand the struggles and duties that typical Canadian homeowners face. The campaign kicked off with a large banner advertisement on the homepages of Youtube and Facebook along with a micro site, which contained twenty videos featuring various products that are available for sale at the massive Canadian retailer. The goal was to feature the various products as they made everyday repairs and replacements to the home. Canadian Tire pledged that once the home was completely fixed up, they would sell it and donate all of the proceeds to their national charity ‘Jumpstart’.

I wanted to share this example as I feel that the House of Innovation covers all of the key areas of: transparency, social responsibility, trust and creativity. Not only did Canadian Tire make their brand truly transparent and trustworthy by replicating a level of similarity between the average Canadian homeowner and the brand; but also they were extremely creative in their approach to target and educate the average homeowner. In addition, they even pledged to be socially responsibility by donating all of the proceeds to their charity.

The entire conference was filled with extremely valuable and insightful information. The House of Innovation was only one of the many examples that helped unify all of the main points throughout the event. Again, I would like to extend a very special thank you to the IAB Mixx Conference and Humber College for not only inviting the students but for also making opportunities such as these available. I truly believe that keeping up-to-date with industry trends is an essential ingredient for success; I highly encourage all students to take advantage of the various networking and conference opportunities that are available to them.

Humber Graduates Share Their Expertise

Last Friday Humber College was proud to host the annual Grads Give Back event at the North Campus. Humber College marketing students attended the event to gain industry insights and professional advice from past Humber College marketing program graduates. Humber College understands the importance of students remaining up-to-date with industry trends and opportunities; as such, Humber frequently makes these types of opportunities available to students. to further expand knowledge and learning out of the classroom.

The event featured insights and experiences from seven graduates within various industries:

Presenter #1: Zac Stanley- Digital Agency
Presenter #2: Dylan Morrow- Sales Account Management
Presenter #3: Natasha Persad- Social Media Marketing
Presenter #4: Lakshmi Mani- Office Administration
Presenter #5: Marc Boileau- Digital Agency
Presenter #6: Grace Vanden Heuvel- Retail Marketing
Presenter #7: Steve Lorini- Social Media Marketing

Each presenter shared his/her own personal insights and experiences since they graduated from Humber. Throughout the event, each speaker touched upon a few common areas including: education, job search, employment and future opportunities. Three key topics came to light:

1. Job Search

Nearly each of the speakers touched upon the issues, challenges and opportunities associated with searching for employment. One of the most apparent messages pointed out that applying for a job should be taken seriously. It is not simply a passive activity that you do while sitting on the couch watching a movie. Similarly, the presenters stressed the importance of getting out there and pushing through the clutter to find a job that truly suits your skill set and abilities. The most common sources that the graduates used to find jobs include: monster.ca, careerbuilder.com and the school employment centers.

2. The Transition

Managing the transition between college life and professional life can be very difficult for many students. Zac Stanley and Marc Boileau discussed the importance of managing the differences between school projects and work projects. Marc explained that the main issues within the transition are due to the increase in the level of stress and responsibility that new graduates face. Similarly, Zac stated that, “Everyone likes to have fun, but once you start working; it’s a different type of fun.” Both the graduates clarified that you don’t have to put your social life on hold - you simply have to alter it to suit your new professional life.

3. Be Realistic

Being realistic in finding your first job was one of the main points that appealed to me. Marc Boileau did an excellent job in conveying the importance of setting strong but realistic job search criteria. Marc says that the most important aspect is to, “Get your foot in the door,” even if it requires taking a job that pays less or has longer hours. If you are able to get started within your industry, then you are a step in the right direction. In addition, Steve Lorini not only agreed with Marc but he also explained the importance of taking advantage of the various opportunities and contacts that are available.

Overall, the event was a huge success. I would like to extend a very special thank you to the returning graduates for sharing their personal insights and industry expertise. If you have the opportunity and are able to attend the event next year, I highly recommend you do so. Not only will you gain insights into career options, but you may also uncover new trends and opportunities to kick start your professional life.

Humber College Honour Pin Ceremony

This past Tuesday the Humber College business school recognized the academic excellence of a group of Marketing Diploma students. Faculty and family members acknowledged the students during the annual Honour Pin Ceremony.

The ceremony highlights the academic achievements of students who achieve an overall average of 80% during the academic calendar year.

Throughout the event a number of speakers concluded that achieving honours is not an easy feat. In fact, achieving honours means much more than simply attending classes and receiving good grades; it encompasses a wide variety skills and attributes such as: hardwork, determination, team work, communication, analytical thinking and problem solving. Excelling within college provides you with more than just good grades. It helps establish the foundation for your future career and success.

In this blog I would like to share with you three tips that I believe can help students achieve both academic and personal success while studying at Humber College.

Tip #1- Get Involved

Becoming involved within the school through both academic and extra circular activities can prove to be very beneficial to a student’s success. Whether it is joining a club such as Toastmasters, a case study competition team, a sports team or even speaking engagements, getting involved can lead to great opportunities.

Tip #2- Stay on top of your studies

Although this tip seems fairly basic, it is very easy to fall behind within your studies. With a full course load, multiple assignments, group projects and your own social life, it can feel very overwhelming at times. Organize, plan and take your time to ensure that everything is completed on time and properly.

Tip#3- Don’t be afraid to ask for help

The sooner you realize that your teachers actually care and that they want to help you succeed, school becomes an entirely different playing field. This has been one of my greatest lessons while studying at Humber. Take advantage of the services on campus; Humber offers various learning centers and tutoring services to ensure that students are successful.

Not only does achieving honours make you stand out amongst the crowd, it also gives you a sense of accomplishment.

Art of Marketing Conference

This past Monday a few Humber faculty members and marketing students visited the Metro Toronto Convention Center to attend the nationally acclaimed Art of Marketing Conference. The Humber College students attended the event to network with marketing professionals and to remain up-to-date with evolving trends in the industry. Humber College frequently makes these types of opportunities available to students to further expand knowledge and learning outside of the classroom. For example, last semester students were invited to a branding presentation by Martin Lindstrom in downtown Toronto.

The conference is a one-day event which features seven internationally renowned best-selling authors and leaders from across the marketing industry. The speakers share their industry expertise and experience on today’s most critical marketing issues. The Art of Marketing conference attracted a crowd of over 500 individuals, including a number of Humber College graduates. In this blog post I am going to highlight three key overall themes of the event

First, I would like to share the names of the speakers that presented at the conference and their role within the world of marketing. I highly recommend taking some time to research each of these individuals and listen to what they have to say about the future of marketing.

  •        Speaker #1: Mitch Joel- President of Twist Image
  • ·      Speaker #2: Bryan Pearson- Chief Executive Officer, LoyaltyOne
  • ·      Speaker #3: Eric Ryan- Co-founder, Method
  • ·      Speaker #4: Youngme Moon- Harvard Business School
  • ·      Speaker #5: Scooter Braun- Brand Manager for Justin Bieber
  • ·      Speaker #6: Randi Zuckerberg- Head of Marketing at Facebook
  • ·      Speaker #7: Martin Lindstrom- Global Branding Expert

To try and summarize all of the information presented from entire event into one blog post is simply impossible. Instead, I would like to provide you with insight into three themes that truly captured my attention.

1. The Customer

Having a well-rounded understanding of your customers seems like a very basic skill that every marketer should have… and luckily it is! However, many of the presenters suggested that there is much more to the average consumer than many people realize. Not only do consumers purchase products but they can act as a valuable source of information for your brand. Mitch Joel presented one of the best examples through the explanation of the Amazon Price Check Application. Consumers are able to take a picture of a product while in a retail store and instantly compare the price to the exact product that is being sold online through Amazon at a cheaper price. Amazon is literally placing the ability to instantly comparison shop in the hands of the consumer. Although this may be scary to retailers, it’s a strike of genius for Amazon! Not only has Amazon increased their sales, but also they have gained vast amounts of information from users such as: product information, customer product preferences and even shopping habits, which would be otherwise very costly to acquire.

2. How different are you, really?

Marketing is all about creating an identity and developing a brand that makes you unique amongst the crowd. Most people associate brands with large corporations, however brands exist at a much smaller levels. For example, you have your own brand and your own set of unique values that people use to identify you. Youngme Moon, challenged everyone to “Take a moment and ask yourself: How different are you, really [than everyone else]?” She suggested that simply because you think that you are different and unique does not actually mean that you are. Youngme suggested that it is essential to look at yourself through the eyes of a neutral party to truly assess your difference.  She used examples of Ikea and Mini Cooper to portray her point as she noted that true success is not dependent upon being better, but that it is dependent upon being different within the eyes of the consumer.

3. Don’t be realistic!

I decided to include the theme of ‘not being realistic’ into the blog as it literally challenges the entire fundamentals of my childhood. Growing up, I was constantly told to be realistic in my views. As many other children, I dreamed of big and magical things; however, reality slowly kicked in and my views began to plateau into a sea or normalness. Scooter Braun boldly said to stop! Scooter suggests that being realistic will limit you from your full potential and achieving all that you could. He says that it is important to shoot and dream as far as you can and work as hard as it takes to get there… he promises that if you try your best, even if you don’t succeed, you will be happier within life.

Overall, the event was absolutely amazing. The information provided by all of the speakers was extremely insightful and powerful. I highly recommend attending a future Art of Marketing conference, or simply researching the works of the featured speakers to gain an insight into the future of marketing. I would like to end by extending a very special thank you to Humber College for letting me attend this event!

I would like to leave you with a quote from Scooter Braun and a short video highlighting the Art of Marketing.

“ Everyone will say that you are a dreamer and a failure when what you are doing is not working… but when you hit it, they will call you a genius”- Scooter Braun

How to make your blog stand out

The increased accessibility of social networks has allowed for the average individual to make their voice heard throughout the entire world. With over 500 million active blogs worldwide, it is very difficult to make your blog stand out. The attraction is due to the level of creativity and freedom of expression that each blog holds- from vacation destinations to movie reviews and even wedding tips, there is a blog for virtually everything! In this blog I will be highlighting five tips to make your blog stand out amongst the crowd.

#1- Choose a unique topic

Choosing an effective blog topic is easier said than done. The most important aspect is finding an area of interest that you actually enjoy. Try and narrow the focus of your topic to one or a few specific areas. Don’t always jump at selecting the latest and most popular trend. If you are knowledgeable and take pleasure in your topic, it will be well translated into your writing. After all, the last thing that you want is an over-saturated blog topic that will get lost in the crowd.

#2- The title is everything

Nothing is worse then trying to find a specific blog and being faced with titles that are completely unrelated and irrelevant to the topic. When choosing a title it is important to keep it short, bold and catchy. Ensure that the title clearly explains what the blog is about while also catching and holding the readers interest and attention.

#3- Create an attractive design

The appearance of your blog is very important as visitors will decided if they want to stay on the blog solely based on the appearance regardless of the content. It is important to be creative, take the time to create your own blog background rather than relying on a template. In addition, carefully divide your content into relative segments to better organize your content. Lastly, make sure that your blog includes a variety of different widgets including: social media sharing buttons, search bar, blog archive and contact information.

#4- Be visual

A blog is much more than the words that you write and the information that you share; it encompasses a variety of different visual elements to appeal to the readers senses. The most effective blogs include a variety of pictures, videos, charts and graphics in order to capture and hold the readers interest. It is very important to try and incorporate an image or video into every blog post that you write. Not only will it make the blog look more appealing, but it will also help drive traffic through the use of outbound links.

#5- Update your content regularly

The key to having a successful blog is regularly updating the content with timely information that your readers can relate to. Updating your blogs content will not only ensure that the blog contains relative information, but it will also assist in increase the level of traffic to your site. Search engines such as Google, uses algorithms to systematically rank your blog amongst all of the possible search results. One of the main components in ranking websites is based upon the frequency of updated information within your blog. The best practice is to create a schedule with a list of topics that you will write about on a weekly basis; this will help you stay on track and remain focused.

The last step is to have FUN! The above information may seem difficult and tedious, but it will help ensure that your blog is successful.

Creating and managing a blog can feel very rewarding; simply watching the metrics grow is one of the most exciting aspects. Engage with your readers, capture their interest and remember to have fun!

Humber Students Volunteer their time!

Humber College students Courtney Dicks, Catherine Laramore and Karla Olivares have graciously volunteered their time to help strengthen online communications for the Dufferin Hi-Land Bruce Trail Club (DHBTC). This non-profit organization needed help in this area and Humber marketing students rose to the challenge.

The students have done an exceptional job creating a welcoming, stylish and informative online presence using a blog, as well as Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest to communicate to the target market using social media. The blog showcases the beauty of the Dufferin Hi-Land Bruce Trail, provides details on membership, events, trail information and a hiker’s guideline. Social media will be used to connect and engage with online users, in order to stimulate interest and capture attention. In addition, social media will act as an outlet for effectively communicating trail information and updates.

A screen shot of the DHBTC Blog
The challenge was to build on the trail’s respected brand image and to increase its online presence with current members, new members, and its various trail users.  The students turned to skills obtained in their marketing communications and Internet marketing courses and worked to establish a solid social media presence for the DHBTC. “The greatest challenge was coordinating all the content into a unified platform that could be easily interpreted and shared,” explains Courtney Dicks .“The most enjoyable aspect is engaging people through social media.”

Christina Clements, Humber Internet Marketing professor states these types of volunteer activities give students an edge and some experience they can point to in a resume. “These students are very talented and motivated and I am thrilled at the work they are doing for the Dufferin Hi-Land Bruce Trail. I have no doubt that their efforts will increase awareness for the DHBTC!" She goes on to express that International Marketing professor, John Dickason, made this opportunity available to students and is helping liaise with the non-profit organization.

This student work is an excellent example of the skills and caliber of the marketing students at Humber College. Please take a moment to check the links below that showcase the students’ work. I am sure they would be thrilled if you LIKED and FOLLOWED the Facebook and Twitter pages and SUBSCRIBED to the blog!
